A whopping 12.1 tonnes of waste were collected from the ocean floor at 3 locations in Sabah recently thanks to the altruistic efforts of divers, village residents, government and private agencies.

The clean-up project was spearheaded by Jetama Sdn Bhd, a water concessionaire company for the West Coast of Sabah under its Jetama Underwater Cleanup 2024 initiative.

Taking to Facebook, the Semporna Professional Divers Association (SPDA) shared several posts of its members cleaning up the ocean floor at Semporna’s Mabul island, one of the 3 locations where the cleanup project was held.

In one post, SPDA asserted that they managed to clean up 6 tonnes of trash at the picturesque island which is famous for its stunning diving sites.

Well, thanks to SPDA members’ efforts, Mabul can do justice to its moniker as a paradise island as the ocean floor at the island was cleared of unsightly and hazardous litter.

SPDA added that most of the waste they collected there include plastic bottles, 3-in-1 plastic drinks and diapers.

Focusing their efforts at the Panglima Reef and P3 in Mabul, what makes the divers’ efforts even more impressive was that they were fasting during the whole time!

Jetama Sdn Bhd is not resting on its laurels too as the company had announced that it will continue exerting similar programmes to ensure that Net Zero Plastic can be achieved every year, alongside the Net Zero Carbon Footprint and Renewable Energy Credit concept.

Awesome! Thanks to these unsung heroes for their selfless actions and let’s hope that our waters remain clean and trash-free.
