The economy these days may not be the best and recently, the Works Minister, Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi expressed on a podcast that Sarawak should have their own currency if the less favourable economy persists.

The minister appeared on a special podcast episode by Bual Studio and Reka Sound for Merdeka and Malaysia Day titled “From Malaya to Malaysia: 60 Years” when he suggested that Sarawak should explore using its own independent currency, reported Sinar Daily.

Independent Currency Sarawak

As he was expressing his thoughts, he clarified that he was not a traitor to the country.

“If Sarawak economy is so good, while the national economy is not well, perhaps Sarawak will have our own currency.”

Be it as it may, the minister acknowledges that there are still areas of poverty in the state.

Speaking about what the Works Minister has said, Sarawak’s Premier, Abang Johari remarked that the use of an independent currency in Sarawak is merely the minister’s personal opinion and that the state will continue using Ringgit Malaysia, reported Berita Harian.

“I don’t know, that is just Nanta’s opinion. We already have the Malaysian currency, so we have to follow and use it.”

Earlier in July 2023, Abang Johari had tweeted about the recognition of Sarawak as a high-income state by the World Bank’s latest data.
