Car enthusiasts are generally drawn to the car’s model, traits, durability. For a policeman in UK, Jon Coupland, he has been a huge fan of Proton cars for many years. So much so that he owns a collection of 6 Proton cars of various models. As a huge fan of the automotive world, Jon made it clear that he’s into unique and rare cars.

“I accidentally saw a Proton car advertisement on a vehicle buying & selling website.  I went straight to the car dealership and bought a Proton Saga 1.5 car.”

According to him, the 1st car model he bought was a Proton Saga 1.5 SE LE 1990 UK Special Edition which is still in very good condition with a mileage of 48,000 kilometers (km). It was bought for £700 (RM4,000) in 2019.

“Proton model cars can only be owned through the sale of used car companies. This adds to its uniqueness,” Jon said.

Jon is also in love with the early models of Proton cars such as the Saga and Iswara models that feature different designs and finishes compared to cars of the brand commonly seen in Europe.

“I always hunt for Proton models here. It gives me an experience, a challenge and a story of its own.”

Why not modern cars? Jon has his very own reasons as to why he still prefers old Proton cars to the modern day designs of the recent cars.

“Modern cars at the moment look boring and seem to be the same in terms of external shape. Unlike Proton cars, their durability is very reliable.”

The center of attention

Jon also admitted that every time he drives a Proton, people tend to have their attention on the car. To him, it might be because the brand is getting rarer in the UK, and Proton cars are only available as used cars there. He is also a fan of Proton cars thanks to its low maintenance. Jon did not deny that Proton cars are not comparable to those made in Japan, but it’s all about the durability of Proton cars.

“In fact, the spare parts can be given at reasonable prices.”

What makes things easier for Jon is he has his very own personal mechanic – his father who has a vast experience of 50 years in handling cars.

At his peak, Jon used to have 8 different models of Proton cars but when it took too much of space, he’s left with only 6 Proton cars, as reported by Harian Metro.

Who knew Proton has such a “high magnetic power”? We’re glad that Jon enjoys driving our very own local brand.
