The Human Resources (HR) Ministry has addressed the recent issue of allowances for internships, saying that it would be studying it comprehensively and taking appropriate action.

In a press statement, HR Minister V. Sivakumar said that his ministry would be taking into account the views and needs of all the parties involved, including trainees in the industry and private sector players.

Furthermore, Sivakumar urges employers and private companies that hire students as interns to consider other alternatives besides providing grants to less able students.

These proposed alternatives include accommodation, food preparation, transport and others that would reduce students’ burden.

Accordingly, the HR Minister stressed that he agreed with the recent statement by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim that there should be a set allowance for interns who are dependent on employers or private companies.

However, the government has yet to finalise a policy or guidelines regarding the matter. This is because it is a complex issue that requires in-depth study and consultation with various stakeholders, especially the Higher Education Ministry (MOHE).

Nevertheless, Sivakumar assured that the government is committed to ensuring that all interns are treated fairly and equitably regardless of whether they’re in the public or private sector.

In fact, the government would provide clear and detailed guidelines for the payment of training allowances in the private sector should it become necessary.
