We’ve seen these scammers pretending to be well-known figures such as our ministers, top officials or athletes. About 6 months ago, they impersonated Lee Chong Wei to promote their product!

On 28 April, we came across this tweet by Rafizi Ramli, who is our Minister of Economic Affairs, saying that a scammer pretending to be him had approached his employee. If you didn’t know, Rafizi has a data firm named INVOKE.

The conversation with the scammer started off with them saying that they were Rafizi Ramli and asking for acknowledgement when the employee read the message.

The employee played along and asked how they could help to which the scammer replied and said that it was more of a “personal request” as “Rafizi” is busy.

“I’m with the REAL Rafizi right now,” replied the employee.

There were no subsequent messages shown and the real Rafizi mentioned in their tweet that the above conversation is a textbook example of a scammer.

“Signs of a scammer:

  • He admits that he’s your boss at work,
  • Introduces himself with his full name,
  • Asks for acknowledgement on messages, &
  • Asks for personal favours as they are “busy”.

After that, they will ask to buy top-ups, etc, so if you have the mood to scam them back then you can do so.”

Scammers are everywhere nowadays so stay vigilant so that you do not become the next victim.
