As Malaysians, we can hardly deny our love for the king of fruits – durian. The best part about this king of fruits is how we can blend its flavour into other food, such as ice cream and cake. While it’s not really a norm, some Malaysians find joy in eating durian with rice.

A vlogger from China, Liang Zi recently decided to try the rare dish and for that, she visited SS2 in PJ to try it out. To “enhance” the experience, she bought the best durian of all – the Musang King, which is also the most expensive.

Liang had the durian to go and she visited another local favourite – the Mamak restaurant, where she ordered a plate of rice.

She then unpacked the shiny slices of Musang King, which cost her RM90, and mixed the fruit with the plate of rice.

Like a local, Liang ate the food with her bare hands.

Did she like it?

Liang did not specifically say if she was a fan of the combination, but she knew exactly how she felt while having durian with rice.

“The durian is warm now that it’s mixed with the rice. I’m not used to this,” she said.

At the end of the video, she is seen eating the fruit by itself and concluded that it tastes better that way.

What do Malaysians think about mixing durian with rice?

In the comment sections, many Malaysians responded to the video to express their thoughts about the menu, and apparently, a lot of them were also not too fond of having durian with rice.

To them, despite being Malaysians, they find it tough to relate to the combination. Some netizens also suggested better ways for her to enjoy durian.

“I’m east Malaysian, and I’m not used to this too. I prefer the fruit by itself.”

“Not everyone can accept this combination.”

“Pair the fruit with glutinous rice.”

“It’s actually nice, a lot of Hokkien Chinese will be familiar with this.”

“I’m not a fan of this too.”

“Should’ve paired with glutinous rice.”

Another netizen suggested additional ingredients, which to him, will make the dish even tastier.

“Fry the durians with some anchovies and chillies, sprinkle some salt and sugar, and eat it with a bowl of hot rice. Super tasty.”

Fellow Malaysians, are you aware of this combination, and if you haven’t tried it, are you open to doing so? If you’re a Hokkien, is this dish famous for you?
