In a world where people are willing to try just about anything to keep themselves safe from Covid-19, including wrapping themselves head-to-toe in plastic bags to ward off the disease, one man’s endeavor (albeit a very expensive one) in commissioning a unique face mask probably shouldn’t raise as many eyebrows as it did.

But yet here we are, marveling at the sheer expense that Shankar Kurhade, a businessman from Pune, was willing to make to protect himself from Covid-19.

The mask weighs 60g and took craftsmen eight days to make.

Spending well over US$4,000 (RM17,150) to have it custom made for him, the mask features over 60g of bona-fide real gold, and took the extent of over eight days to craft to completion. The end result is a very ornate, very expensive, yet dubiously effective, face mask and fashion statement.

“It is a thin mask and has tiny pores that is helping me to breathe,” he said.

So yes, it is possible to breathe through that mask just fine. But for all that money he has spent on it, Mr Shankar admits that he isn’t certain that the mask is completely effective in keeping the Covid-19 coronavirus at bay, and is also making sure to practice other precautions on top of wearing his blinged-out mask.

Shankar kurhade (48), shows his face mask made out of gold as he poses for a photograph amidst the spread of the coronavirus disease (covid-19) in pune, india, july 4, 2020.

As it turns out, wearing extravagant amounts of gold is something that Mr Shankar does habitually, and he often leaves the house adorned with no less than one kilo of gold jewelry, which includes a bracelet, a necklace, and a single ring for every finger on both his hands, according to The Straits Times.

At this moment in time, India represents the fourth worst hit country by Covid-19, with over 674,312 cases reported and 19,289 deaths.

What do you guys think of this?
