We Malaysians are truly a unique group of people, ammirite? There are so many things we do, eat, say, drink, wear and more that are unique to us and sometimes, it’s things only we would ever do, no one else. Want to know if you’re a true Malaysian? See if you’ve done any of these before:

1. You would drive all the way to Penang or even Seremban just to have authentic Assam Laksa or Siew Paos

It goes without saying that Malaysians absolutely LOVE food. In fact, most of us literally live to eat! You’ve probably even taken road trips out of town with friends or family for the sole reason of eating, and nothing else. Don’t pretend you don’t know what we’re talking about. 😛

2. Ordering teh ais ikat tepi at a mamak and placing it in a bowl

Gone are the days where we would bungkus drinks so we could have them on the go. Nowadays, many of us order our drinks in ikat tepi bags even if we’re just sitting in the mamak stall! This is because we get way more to drink when we have them in plastic bags compared to when we order them in cups, kan?

3. Drinking salt water from a Durian shell after eating it

Whether this actually helps or not we’ll never know, but it’s a common belief among Malaysians that drinking salt water from the Durian shell can actually help cool down the body.

4. Ramly Burgers are your go-to late night snack

Who wouldn’t love a nice, juicy burger drowned in chilli sauce and mayo? It’s the best late-night snack; plus, it’s affordable! And if you’re unsure of where to find a Ramly Burger stall, look for a 7-11 store, odds are there’s a Ramly Burger stall located right in front.

5. Using ‘THE HAND’ whenever you cross the road

Regardless of whether you’re crossing the road as a pedestrian or a driver, using THE HAND is a powerful thing. You can get someone who was speeding right towards you to stop instantly just by giving a quick wave.

6. Queuing up for hours on end for that new, and kononnya famous, bubble tea (or any other new and femez food chain for that matter)

When it comes to food and drinks, especially new restaurants and outlets, you can rest assured that Malaysians will be there no matter what. In fact, it’s so important to us that we’re willing to queue for hours just so we can be one of the first few to try it (and post it on Instagram).

7. Making a day trip to Genting or Cameron Highlands just so you can escape the humid weather

And of course, have some scones and maybe even pluck some strawberries while we’re at it. This is the best we can do since Malaysia doesn’t have the luxury of enjoying the four seasons.

8. Lepak-ing at a shop so you can make use of the free WiFi

Especially when it comes to work or assignments, we often find ourselves camping out in cafes with our books and laptops for hours and hours… and with only one miserable cup of coffee.

9. Glamping at Sunway Lost World of Tambun

While glamping isn’t the most common activity in Malaysia, you’ll be glad to know that you can actually go glamping in Sunway Lost World of Tambun right beneath the starry night sky amidst the larger-than-life caves in the backdrop. In fact, there’s so much to do here that we’re 110% sure you’ve been there before.

And in case you’re one of the few who is unfamiliar with the place, here are some other exciting activities you can do there:

  • Have a meal at the Dulang Tea House under a 400 million-year-old limestone cave
  • Get your adrenaline pumping at the Water Park, Amusement Park and Adventure Park
  • Visit their new waterpark which also happens to be Asia’s first ever water-based dark ride attraction: Malayana Rainfortress (Pssst, we heard it’s estimated to open in August 2019!)
  • Pet cuddly and furry cats at Catopia
  • Venture through the Luminous Forest that’s basically like an Avatar movie set in real life and get acquainted with the Malayana tribe!
