The government previously set a target to achieve herd immunity by October 2021, with 80% of the adult population being fully vaccinated.
Just about a week until October, prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced that 80% of the adult population has been fully vaccinated as of 21 September!
Minister of Health Khairy Jamaluddin also confirmed the news in a Tweet, saying that the target was reached as of 1pm yesterday (21 September).
He added that although the initial target of getting 80% of the adult population vaccinated has been reached, the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme (JKJAV) will now try to keep track of the 20% who have not or refused to get vaccinated.
Meanwhile, the government has started vaccinating teenagers aged 12-17, and as of 20 September, as many as 308,000 teenagers have received their first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine, reported Astro Awani.
Malaysia is slowly entering the endemic phase when even more economic sectors will start reopening. If you have not been vaccinated, please consider doing so to protect yourself and your loved ones.
