Sexual harassment, as you probably know by now, is not something anyone wants to experience first-hand. After all, the mental trauma it often leaves on a victim tends to last for a long time, not to mention the clear and obvious indecency being committed by one person upon another.
As such, it is only right that the law deals a proper sentence upon those who flout rules of common decency with sexual harassment, such as in this case reported by Channel News Asia and Today Online.
The incident, which occurred on board an MRT train in Singapore during July of last year, saw 67-year-old Marimuthu Jayabal, who works as a security guard, trying to sexually harass a 20-year-old student who was in the same train with him.
Sitting down across from the young man, Marimuthu stared at him for an extended period of time, and even licked his lips as he did it. That’s kinda familiar…
But when the student didn’t react and moved to a seat closer to an entrance, Marimuthu gestured with a hand to the empty seat next to him, showing that he wanted the 20-year-old man to sit next to him. He even went so far as to pat his shirt pocket when the young man shook his head, indicating that he was willing to pay the young man for his time. Whaaaat?!
Relentless, Marimuthu decided to get bolder with his intentions and moved to sit next to the victim, trying to chat him up. Even when he was ignored, Marimuthu persisted in his advances and tried showing the young man a porn video, before sliding his hand up his thigh!
Understandably spooked by the entire experience, the victim left one station ahead of his intended stop. Even then, Marimuthu continued to tail him, scaring the young man so much that he decided to head right to the police station to file a report.
When called upon to court, Marimuthu reportedly expressed his fear of prison and tried to bargain for a fine instead.
He said: “I am afraid of the dark, confinement and handcuffs. I don’t want to go to prison. Even when I was arrested, I was led away without any handcuffs,”
He also mentioned that his daily salary of SGD80 (RM242) goes completely to his sickly daughter and wife, who suffers from ‘old-age ailments’. Regardless, he will be facing 3 weeks in jail for his offences.
We hope that Mr Marimuthu will learn from this experience and know better than to sexually harass anybody in the future.
