There’s never been a more glorious time for shopping than today, where almost all your favourite retailers and even artisans have transitioned online to sell their wares. It’s so easy to find exactly what you want to purchase and be in control of your spending.

From designer clothing to a dish rack, there’s virtually nothing that you cannot find online and all you have to do is click ‘add to cart’ and click ‘buy’ and the item(s) is all yours.

This is super convenient, although it could make you slip into an uncontrolled shopping spree at the same time. That’s why we have put together some online shopping hacks (or advice, rather) to help you spend wisely!

1. Stalk the brands, bloggers & influencers you like for discount codes & updates

1A

If you haven’t followed any of the brands you like on social media yet, go ahead and do that! This is probably one of the best ways to stay informed on any offers and discounts they might have especially during sale season.

Additionally, try and follow a few popular influencers or bloggers you might like as they are always giving out special discount codes to their followers as well.

2. Use incognito mode & clear your browser cache when shopping on travel sites

When purchasing from travel sites, booking engines have long been suspected of showing higher fares on routes you have previously searched. An algorithm allegedly ‘guesses’ your next destination, tracks the site’s cookies and raises the price seeing as how you will most likely purchase the ticket regardless of the price. So to avoid these unnecessarily high prices, make sure to turn on incognito mode before you buy that holiday ticket so you can get it at a good price.

3. Don’t forget to use your birthday vouchers, and perhaps your relatives’ too

Most shopping sites offer birthday vouchers when you sign up as a member and they could come up to anywhere between 30% and 35% off on average. You could also ask your parents, siblings, cousins, aunties, and uncles to sign up as well even if they don’t shop from that merchant to enjoy discounts on their birthdays as well.

4. Leave items in your cart for a while and you might get a personalised discount

If you don’t need that particular item urgently, you could just leave it in your cart for a while and wait to see if the merchant sends you an email or in-app notification offering a custom discount or offer just for you! Many online merchant sites do this to retain their customers and of course to get you to buy something.

Think of it like a relationship where one partner tries to ‘pujuk‘ the other with gifts. Just remember that for this to work, you would usually have to have an account registered with the brand or website.

5. Use your bank cards to reap all the rewards they offer when you shop

Let’s not forget about all the offers and deals that are exclusive to certain cardholders! Banks usually offer their credit, debit and prepaid cardholders special rates and discounts at certain outlets and even from partnering online merchants. Whether it’s cash back, discounts, unique promos, and so forth, using your card to pay can help you reap many benefits! In fact, if you happen to be a CIMB Bank cardholder, you’re in for a treat!
