As humans, we often attach sentimental value to certain things in our lives. It could be an old pillow, a book, or even a car. Whatever it is, it holds a special place in our hearts for a reason.

In a recent TikTok video shared by @anak.khoo, she captures a heartwarming moment of her son struggling to let go of something that means the world to him.

“Joshua is a very sentimental child”

In the video, a 4-year-old boy is seen crying after his parents tell him they will be replacing their old car with a new one.

Speaking to WORLD OF BUZZ, Ms. Khoo explained that in Singapore, everyone needs a Certificate of Entitlement (COE), which is a certificate you must bid for before you can buy a new car.

The car is 15 years old!

Ms. Khoo explained that in Singapore, you get the COE through an auction, with only a limited number of certificates released each month. Right now, a COE costs between SGD90K to SGD100K, depending on the car category.

She also mentioned that you can renew a COE for either 5 or 10 years, but the renewal cost is based on the current market price of the COE. They had already extended their car’s COE for 5 years, making the car 15 years old.

“Since a COE can only be extended once per car, they now have to scrap it,” she added.

They only received back SGD1.2K from the scrap

Ms. Khoo revealed that she and her husband had been preparing their son, Joshua, weeks in advance since he gets very sentimental about things.

When they picked Joshua up after school with the new car, he looked around and realised that the new car isn’t so bad, but he did quietly say,

“Next time, bring back the old car.”

Joshua even offered his piggy bank money to keep the old car and suggested they keep both cars as a backup in case one breaks down.

“If Joshua saw how cars in Singapore are scrapped for parts, he would be heartbroken. In the meantime, we’ll try to create new memories with this new car,” Ms. Khoo added.
