A 37-year-old participant of the Langkawi International Half Marathon (LIHM) 2022 has tragically died en route to the hospital yesterday after he collapsed near the finish line of the marathon. The man, Nik Mohd Faiz Nik Mohd Nazmi was a senior lecturer at Universiti Putra Malaysia’s (UPM) Veterinary Clinical Studies Department.
As reported by Bernama, Langkawi District Police chief ACP Shariman Ashari said that the police received a call at 10.30am from a doctor on duty at the Sultanah Maliha Hospital’s Emergency Unit with the tragic news that the half marathon participant had died while on the way to the hospital. Shariman asserted,
“He was a participant in the Langkawi International Half Marathon 2022 and preliminary investigations found that he collapsed near the finish line and was unconscious. Medical and Civil Defence Force (APM) personnel administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation before he was taken to the Sultanah Maliha Hospital,”
The Langkawi District Police further revealed that the body of the deceased would be referred to the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Kedah for a post-mortem. Moreover, the case had been classified as sudden death.
