Money is often one of the main issue that people struggle with and with the news of a global recession possibly happening next year, many people have been trying their best to make sure that they’re well equipped.
Just recently, a Malaysian man shared a post on a Facebook page where he said, “I just want to ask, how much money must a 30-year-old have in their savings account?”
“I’m currently 25 years old and I have about RM20,000 in my savings, and I want to hit RM70,000 when I’m 30.”
He then went ahead and said that he doesn’t know how much he should save because there’s a big difference within his friends.
“Some of my friends are living from paycheck to paycheck while some of my other friends are buying houses. (How much money they have in their bank accounts I wouldn’t know).”
“So, I would like to know how much savings I should have if I want to have a decent life when I retire,” he added.
He then ended the post by mentioning that he is just a normal employee and doesn’t spend much on food.
“Don’t sacrifice your health for the sake of earning more money.”
Many netizens were quick to share their thoughts and here’s what some of them said:
“Just a small tip: The EPF interest rate is higher than a lot of fixed savings accounts. If you’re not in need of the money and you only want to use it when you retire, I’d suggest you just contribute it to you EPF account,” suggested a netizen.
Another suggested for him to “find a financial advisor that’s nice and tell them your goals. Let them help you come up with a feasible financial plan.”
Meanwhile, some users pointed out that balance is key. “It’s great to earn more money but you should also know how to balance your life out. Don’t sacrifice your health for the sake of earning more money. If not, the money you earn will be used to foot the medical bill.”
“I don’t think there’s a fixed number on how much you should save when you’re at a certain age. Everyone has different priorities and the money that they have may be used differently. You do you and spend/save however you like,” said another user.
It’s good to have some savings in your account as you wouldn’t know when you’ll need it. However, it’s good to note that life is not a competition, and we would encourage Malaysians to not compare amongst one another.
