Working on semester break or part time is not a rarity for university students.
Whilst many are keen on choosing jobs in retails stores or being a barista, Azwan Ali chose a different path altogether by becoming a security guard.

A photo of him in his security guard uniform next to his convocation gown went viral on Twitter recently. The tweet that saw 1,300 retweets and 2.5k likes was captioned, “Started from the bottom, now we’re here” which just goes to show how far he has made it in his journey.
According to Azwan, the picture was taken just as he finished his Certified Security Guard (CSG) training.
But then was him then.
Now, the graduate in Information Technology is currently working as an IT analyst with a multinational oil and gas company based in Johor.
Sharing his experience, the UTP graduate mentioned that he has a penchant for any kind of work at the time in pursuit of experience.
“Ever since I finished Form 3, I began dabbling in part-time work. I used to work as a dishwasher at a food court and after my SPM, I worked in a convenience store.”
“When I went to further my studies, I tried to become a security guard. When semester break arrives, I would do part-time work patrolling my housing area.”
According to the 22-year-old, he didn’t do it because of financial constraints but rather for the experience.
“I had no problems with managing my finances. I just wanted to know what it feels like to be in their shoes.”
“We have a stigma that their job is easy, but the truth is that it is a big responsibility.”
Adding that he earned RM50 a day being security guard, Azwan also shared that he was constantly looked down upon because of his position.
“The stigma that security guards are not well educated was something that I faced on a daily basis.”
“We should never be judgmental of others because of their position as it is honest work.”
Azwan is proof that you should never judge a book by its cover. You go Azwan!
