Most of us like nothing more than going for happy hour after a long week at work, right? Plus, you get to chill with your friends! However, make sure you don’t overdo it otherwise it could produce dire consequences! This young teen from Guangdong, China had a little too much to drink and as a result, he died from alcohol poisoning.
Wang Yaodong, a 19-year-old university student had went out to a bar in Zhuhai for a celebration with his friends after they finished taking their English exams.
According to Shanghaiist, the bar they visited had a special challenge where customers who could down six cocktails (1,800 milliliters in total) in just three minutes will get these drinks for free!
However, if the challenger fails, they would then need to pay 168 yuan (RM107) for the drinks. Wang accepted the challenge and started chugging the drinks. After the fourth cup, he started to show some discomfort but nobody noticed as they were all cheering him on. When he finally drank the sixth cup, the alcohol effects started to show and he began to lose consciousness.
His panicked friends tried to get him to vomit the alcohol out but by then his lips had started to turn purple and his pulse was getting weaker. Oriental Daily reported that at first, the bar staff had reassured them that this was normal and told them to let him rest for awhile.
As his pulse grew weaker, the staff realise that something was amiss and his friends immediately called for an ambulance. Bewilderingly, it was at this point that the bar allegedly stopped the students from calling emergency services as they claimed that “it would be bad for business.” Seriously?
After some frantic discussion, the bar owner drove Wang and his friends to the hospital, 40 minutes after he had first collapsed. By the time he arrived in the hospital, he had no heartbeat and was not breathing. The medical staff managed to resuscitate him but the next day, his condition deteriorated and he passed away soon after that.
One of his classmates who was there at the scene said guiltily, “I did not know he couldn’t drink, I thought he had good alcohol tolerance.” Meanwhile, his sister told reporters that her brother was a studious fellow and hardly ever drank alcohol.
So, you could imagine the shock and devastation of his parents, who worked as farmers, when they were notified that their obedient son had died from alcohol poisoning. His death came as a shock to Chinese netizens with most people finding different reasons to blame the bar, his friends and even Wang himself.
However, some of them looked at the root of the problem and blamed China’s drinking culture which has caused many tragic deaths over the past. In China, the amount of alcohol you drink shows the amount of “face” you are willing to give.
Remember to drink responsibly people! Your life is more precious than completing a challenge!
