An 18-year-old college student believed to be drunk got into an accident after beating a red light near Bukit Bintang heading towards Kampung Pandan.
In the incident that happened at 11.30pm on 6 December, the student had attempted to escape after crashing into another vehicle, but was eventually stopped by the public, reported Oriental Daily.
Many bystanders recorded a video of the whole ordeal, where the suspect was seen being beaten up by the public while others shouted at him, accusing him of trying to run away.
According to Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief ACP Zulkefly Yahya, at the time of the incident, the suspect was carrying two of his friends, aged 18 and 19, in the car.
“The car ran through a red light and hit another car during the incident, but fortunately it did not cause any casualties,” he said.
He added that the police arrived at the scene after receiving a report and conducted an alcohol test on the student, and found that the student’s blood alcohol content exceeded the prescribed limit. He was then arrested on the spot.
“The driver who caused the accident was charged under Section 45(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, but because he was under the legal age under the relevant laws, he was released on bail of RM4,000,” Zulkefly said, adding that the police will also conduct investigations under Article 79(2) of the same law.
