As time passes, one of the most debatable questions would be if tertiary education is necessary. Some may think that furthering their studies wouldn’t make a difference in their lives while others believe that it is the key to many other opportunities.
Just recently a 17-year-old guy shared his thought on higher education on Facebook.
In his post, he said,
“I’m currently 17 and I’m waiting for my SPM results. While waiting, I decided to head over to HaiDiLao to work and my current pay is about Rm3,000.”
He then mentioned that most of his peers are still asking their parents for money while he’s able to survive without asking from his parents. He explained that his uncle and aunty have been telling his dad that,
“No matter what, he should at least have a certificate.”
Following that, he said that his dad has been forcing him to continue his studies, but he doesn’t want to.
“I don’t understand why my dad insists that I continue my studies. I earn more than some fresh graduates and I think it’s a waste of time continuing my studies. What should I do?”, he asked.
Many netizens were concerned and left their comments in the post. Here’s what some of them said:
“You’re young and back then I had the same thinking, but you need to know, without a certificate you won’t be able to move forward. If you want go further in your career, you need a certificate. Unless you decide to stay in this company until you retire, if you decide to move, they’ll still ask to see a certificate.”
“Studying isn’t just for you to earn money, it’s to help you develop better critical thinking skills. If you do manage to be promoted, do you know how to train yourself to manage other people?”
“You’re still young, you’ve not experienced the real working experience. A certificate may not mean much but it will definitely be of use in the future. A few more years of knowledge in education could lead you to more opportunities.”
Tertiary education is very subjective and as long as the path you choose works for you, what other people say shouldn’t matter. What advice would you give?
