A 10-year-old girl in China went viral in the country recently after she willingly turned herself in at the local police station after being asked by her parents to do so.
This is after her parents caught her stealing CNY800 or approximately RM512 from them to purchase snacks.
As reported by SCMP, the incident happened on 22 August, after catching their daughter red-handed, the girl’s father accompanied the girl, surnamed Zhang to the police station in Ningbo, Zhejiang.
There, the girl tearfully admitted the offence to the police. Unbeknownst to Zhang, her father had actually tipped off the local police and planned the whole thing so that it could ‘teach her a lesson’.
During her confession at the police station, the 10-year-old said that her family owned a convenience store from where she often bought snacks. However, her father had become concerned about her health and imposed restrictions on how much she could eat.
The little girl then came up with a cunning scheme, whereby she would steal money from her parents and then give it to her classmates who would buy snacks using the money and hand it to her.
One of the police officers there, Dong, asked the girl to write down a pledge, asserting,
“If you are determined to correct your mistakes, let’s make a pledge and write a commitment letter. We can correct them step by step.”
The young girl then nodded and wrote down a letter to the police which read,
“I will no longer take my mum and dad’s money, and I will not deceive anyone. I will study diligently and stop playing during class. I will complete my homework on time every day.”
She then apologised to her father and the police officer made her a promise to “work together to gradually correct our mistakes and uphold our promises,”
Aww, so cute! What a clever scheme by the father to make his daughter own up to her mistakes and try to become a better person moving forward.
