Lofi music was a huge thing a few years back (and still is!). And one of the pioneers of this genre of music was a YouTube account by the name of Lofi Girl.
Lofi girl has a few non-stop streams that have been going on for more than 2 years now, with more than 600 million views on one of them. On July 10 however, YouTube officially stopped and removed the channel due to a false copyright claim.
In a screenshot on Lofi Girl‘s Twitter account, we see a YouTube notification telling the lofi channel that their stream was taken down due to a copyright claim by a Malaysian company named “FMC Music Sdn Bhd Malaysia”.
The tweet gained much traction on social media, and many fans were angry that their comfort stream was stopped. This has caused many international netizens to target FMC music’s social media accounts.
“Disgrace to Malaysia.”
24 hours after the initial tweet by Lofi Girl, YouTube replied: “Confirmed the takedown requests were abusive & terminated the claimant’s account.”
They added, “We’ve resolved the strikes + reinstated your vids – it can sometimes take 24-48 hours for everything to be back to normal! So sorry this happened & thx for your patience as we sorted it out.”
According to Lofi Girl, this is not the first time their content has been removed. In 2020, their entire channel was gone due to an error from YouTube’s side.
They added that this incident has shown that there needs to be an improvement on YouTube’s side regarding the copyright reporting system, which allows just about anyone to file a claim.
As of the time of writing, the streams are still down.
WORLD OF BUZZ has reached out to FMC Music Sdn Bhd for a statement, and they have yet to respond.
Update: The channel finally seems to be up and running.
