In certain states and places, there are stricter rules to follow when it comes to your attire.

Just yesterday (June 25), a woman in Kelantan was fined for wearing shorts. What baffled her was the fact that she received a fine for wearing indecent clothes in her own boutique. According to the issued fine, it is stated that the woman was not dressed appropriately – a t-shirt and a short covering only her buttocks.

The boutique owner, Lee said that she has been running her business in the state for more than 2 years now, and it was the first time that she experienced such an incident. She has always been wearing t-shirts and shorts inside her shop, and she wore the same attire when she worked in a hair saloon in the state previously.

However, her attire was never an issue until the recent incident. Lee also said that she tried to plead with the officers but to no avail.

“I was given the fine without any prior warning,” Sin Chew reported.

Now, according to Section 34(2)(b) of the Kota Bharu City Council Commercial Trade & Industrial Local Government Regulations 2019, there is a specific section that speaks about clothing.

Muslim employees should wear clothes that cover their aurat, and non-Muslim employees, they are only required to put on decent clothes.

According to another report by Sin Chew, the Kota Bharu City Council has since clarified that while they did issue the fine, the shorts that Lee shared was not the one she wore when the officers visited her boutique.

“The T-shirt and the shorts she wore when we visited the boutique were completely different. It would’ve been fine if she had worn a normal short,” the officer said.

While covering the aurat obviously does not apply to the non-Muslims, they are expected to dress modestly. However, the regulations do not specifically mention how modest an attire is.

Do you think Lee should be fined for her attire in her own boutique?
