For a Pokemon card, is it worth a fight?
Just recently, a Reddit user, who is also a volunteer at a youth center shared his experience of conversing with a woman who forced him to sell 1 of his Pokemon cards. The man volunteered to care for the kids, and 1 of the mothers wanted to surprise her kid with 1 of the Pokemon cards (Charizard, to be precise) that the man had shown to her kid earlier.
The mother offered to buy the Charizard card for AUD140 (approximately RM422.50) as per the eBay listing, which the man rejected as it was more valuable for having rare features, as well as being authenticated by a company that graded the condition and preserved it in a capsule. But that was not all.
“Actually, I don’t plan on selling it. The kids just wanted to see it,” the man reiterated.
The mother then increased the price and told that she was willing to pay AUD 200 (approximately RM603.5) for the Charizard card. Once again, the man rejected it, saying it was even more expensive and the point remained the same – he was not selling it.
He even showed the woman an eBay listing for the one he has in the same grade, which didn’t sit well with her. The price for a rare Charizard Pokemon card can go up to AUD15,000 (approximately RM45,285) as revealed by the man in his Reddit thread.
“It’s just cardboard!”
To her, the price was ridiculous for “just cardboard” and the man clarified that there is always a big market for Pokemon cards. The woman expressed her disappointment, to which the man said,
“I looked after your kid for free, and gave him a free card of my own collection.”
Out of generosity, the man even suggested she look for a reprint which will cost her much lesser. Still, that did not de-escalate the situation and in fact, she started insulting the man who cared for her kid.
“I’m frankly disgusted. Quite sad, really, a grown man playing cards with kids.”
He then “came back” with an even more brutal response by saying, “Quite sad I spend more time with your son than you do.”
The woman then responded to him with vulgarities and told him to expect a call from the youth center for his response. However, that did not scare the man one bit as he was just a volunteer.
