Last year, Crackhouse Comedy Club in PJ went viral after an open micer, who claimed to have memorised half of the Holy Quran removed her Hijab and Baju Kurung on the stage, revealing her sleeveless outfit.
Her sudden act received major criticisms online and the matter has since been brought to court. Today (April 17), the verdict was finally revealed. The open micer, Siti Nuramira Abdullah has been fined RM8,000 by the Sessions Court, and she pleaded guilty to the charges of deliberately hurting the feelings of others by bringing up religious issues during a stand-up comedy session in June 2022.
If she fails to pay the fine, the court has ordered her to be sentenced to 4 months of jail time.
Siti Nuramira committed the offense under Section 298 of the Penal Code, and according to the deputy public prosecutor, Siti Nuramira should be punished accordingly. Siti’s lawyer, on the other hand, requested the court to impose a lighter punishment on the basis that she had no prior criminal record, reported Utusan.
“The accused’s guilty plea today saves the court’s time and costs. Since the incident, she has not performed anything relating to the offense, and she has no social media where she managed to stay away from controversies,” her lawyer said.
In late June last year, it was reported that the founder of the Crackhouse Comedy Club in TTDI, PJ had been arrested over 2 racial clips that went viral immediately after Siti’s incident. Fast forward to August of the same year, the license for Crackhouse Comedy Club was cancelled and the owner has been blacklisted from registering for businesses in KL for life.
Regardless, we hope that Siti will learn a valuable lesson from this incident, and this shall serve as a stern reminder to others out there to be aware of their jokes especially when they are performing in public.
