Some people stay awake with a good cup of latte, while others make do with a simple Kopi O’ to keep the heavy machinery working. It’s all about the taste of the coffee and how it keeps you going, but how much are you willing to pay for one?
A coffee house in Shanghai, China recently had to close down only after 3 months in the business. We usually pay around RM12 to RM15 for a cup of latte, but customers who patronised the now-closed down coffee house in China had to pay… 6,200 yuan (approximately RM4,100) for a cup of coffee!
Yes, we’re not joking. Customers had to pay an amount which is many of our monthly wages just for a dose of caffeine.
The establishment was founded in 2022 and since then, 4 outlets have been opened in Shanghai and Guangzhou. 2 in Guangzhou closed their doors in September last year.
Another 2 outlets opened their doors in November in Shanghai and went viral for their prices, but all operations ceased in January 2024, after the sky-high price led to the investigations conducted the China’s Market Regulatory authorities.
Why was it so expensive? The key lies in the coffee beans that were used in “crafting” the beverage for customers.
The management of the Shanghai store said that they used limited edition coffee beans from 2023 BOP (Best of Panama). The quantity was limited, so the price was high. With more demand but less supply, that explains the sky-high price, which beats the RM1,200 price that a Malaysian content creator recently paid for a cup of coffee in KL.
However, when it comes to the closure, the management did not mention their price as the reason that sealed their fate.
“We had to close due to poor business conditions,” the management explained in a statement.
Regardless, would you pay RM4,000 for your daily dose of caffeine, assuming you can afford it?
