As a surge of boycotts affects Malaysian businesses believed to have connections with Israel or the United States, US Pizza intends to change its name to “Kita Pizza”, with Kita meaning “us” in Malay, once its Facebook post garners more than 10,000 likes and comments.
Earlier, the Prima Saujana, Kajang branch of US Pizza took to its Tiktok account and shared that they are owned by a local Muslim owner and that their name ‘US’ means “kita” in Malay, instead of a shortened form of USA (United States of America), who are supporters of Israel.
On 18 November, the official Facebook of US Pizza Malaysia shared a post, asking netizens what name they would like the brand to adopt.
The post also states that once it has accumulated more than 10k likes and comments, US Pizza will rebrand itself as “Kita Pizza”. As of the time of writing, the post has garnered about 857 likes and 213 comments.
Some netizens also suggested other names such as “MY Pizza” and “Pizza Kita” which bring out more local essence.
One day after the post (19 November), US Pizza Malaysia introduced a Buy 1 Free 1 promotion, noting that “US” can also mean “Untuk Semua (For Everyone)” as stated by some netizens, aligning the promotion with a commitment to support locals.
“US Pizza will also be donating RM1 from every receipt to a renowned Palestinian humanitarian aid organization. *Don’t worry! US Pizza does not pay royalties to the U.S.” the post added.
The Buy 1 Free 1 promotion is available only for dine-in and is valid until 30 November 2023.
