In response to President Trump’s 34% tariff on all Chinese goods, China recently retaliated by imposing 34% reciprocal tariffs on all imports from the United States, which will come into effect on April 10.

Now, Trump is responding by threatening China with an additional 50% tariff on goods if they do not withdraw the 34% counter-tariff.

According to the BBC, this 50% tariff comes on top of 20% tariffs already set in place in March and the 34% announced just last week, bringing the total tariff on Chinese imports to 104%.

Based on Trump’s post on the Truth Social platform, the President gave China until April 8 to withdraw its counter-tariff. Failure to do so will result in an additional 50% tariff, effective April 9.

In the same post, Trump added that, “All talks with China concerning their requested meetings with us will be terminated! Negotiations with other countries, which have also requested meetings, will begin taking place immediately. ”

As of the time of writing, his Truth Social post has garnered over 12,000 ReTruths and 52,000 Likes.

According to CNBC, a statement by China’s Commerce Ministry remarked that it “resolutely opposes” Trump’s threats.

“The U.S. threat to escalate tariffs on China is a mistake on top of a mistake,” the statement said, according to a CNBC translation.

“China will never accept it. If the U.S. insists on its own way, China will fight to the end.”

UPDATE (April 9): Trump’s tariffs take effect

A new round of tariffs imposed by Trump has officially taken effect.

According to CNBC, imports from 86 countries, including Malaysia, are now subject to higher tariffs ranging from 11% to 84%.

Imports from China, on the other hand, are now subject to 104% in total tariffs as previously reported.

Additionally, Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul will be leading the Malaysian delegation to Washington to discuss the new tariffs on Malaysian goods.
