Over 100 people turned up to protest against rising prices outside of the Sogo shopping complex yesterday.
The group, identified as the Turun Movement, were made up of student groups protesting against price hikes and the rise in Minister’s salaries, among others.
Originally planning to march towards Dataran Merdeka, the group’s progress was halted by police, who formed several layers of blockade.
Throughout the protest, leaders of the group can be seen and heard urging the crowd, to not fear police presence and to move forward to their intended destination.
According to Turun Malaysia Committee member, Amir Abd Hadi, the march questions the Sabah State Assembly for passing a bill, increasing the salary of its members by 40%.
“Why are ministers’ salaries increased, when the people are suffering to make ends meet?”
“How are they able to approve such a Bill, while on the ground people have no source of income to get through the next day?”
PKR Youth Chief Adam Adli was also present at the rally, adding that this is only the beginning.
Other demands include the deduction of ministers’ salaries and addressing food security issues.
