Two-time former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad opened the Wawasan 2020 time capsule today, which was kept at Kuala Lumpur Tower since its inauguration on October 1st, 1996.
The historic capsule holds various symbolic items, reflecting the nation’s hopes and aspirations for the year 2020, a vision set by the then Tun Dr Mahathir during the conceptualisation of Vision 2020.
At the event, Tun Dr Mahathir symbolically revealed the contents of the capsule, which was meant to be opened in 2020, but due to the pandemic, it was changed to a later date, which took place today.
Contents of the capsule included photographs of the KL Tower construction, RM2 banknotes, KL Tower posters, photographic film, newspaper ads of the tower, VCDs and more.
Jokingly, Tun Dr Mahathir said,Ā “I didn’t think I’d be here to see what’s inside… I thought I’d be gone by now.”
“I hope this tower continues to symbolise the country’s progress. There were no skyscrapers in Kuala Lumpur, but now, KL is like New York, full of tall buildings.”
“I hope Kuala Lumpur continues to grow as a metropolitan centre for economic, political and social activity and contribute to the world,” he shared.
