A TikTok video has gone viral recently in Singapore after the original poster who mainly posts travel-related content shared why she doesn’t have the island state in her list of favourites.
Posted by Grace or her TikTok handle @gracietravels, she shared that she had travelled to 33 countries and listed down several reasons why she doesn’t rate Singapore.
As of the time of writing, the video garnered over 357,000 views, more than 17,200 likes and around 2,600 comments, most of which are from Singaporeans.
The first reason why she’s not too fond of Singapore is that she found the locals “pretty rude”. Grace elaborated that she was not sure whether it was a “me thing”, but she noticed this as soon as she arrived at the airport with the taxi driver.
Grace asserted,
“He didn’t smile at us, he made me put the luggage in the car and the only time he talked was to ask how much money I made.”
The second reason why the world traveller was indifferent to Singapore was that she felt like she was “not really in Asia” when in the country because everything is “super westernised”. Grace added that this may be due to a lot of tourists and expats when she was there.
The third reason is that everything in Singapore is so expensive, asserting that her stay in Marina Bay Sands cost her a fortune. She was also perplexed at why people are “so obsessed” with the said hotel and its pool deck when they are “many better hotels that are actually worth paying for”.
Grace further elaborated that she had trouble finding a restaurant that wasn’t overpriced and actually had decent food, hence she often had to resort to hawker centres. In relation to that, she also questioned what is there to do in Singapore besides eating and shopping.
The final reason listed in her video is how “Singapore feels so artificial” as “everything is man-made and made for just entertainment”. Grace asserted that the country feels like the Las Vegas of Asia but is actually not quite there yet.

Naturally, Singaporeans responded to the video to point out several things about Grace’s statements that need to be corrected. However, there are also those from the country that agreed with the traveller’s assertions.
One commenter questioned why would Grace complain about how expensive it is and stayed at the Marina Bay Sands, one of the most expensive hotels in the region. Meanwhile, another commenter said that he always never expects a taxi driver to put luggage in the car for him.
So, what do you guys think of the video? Do you agree with Grace’s comments or was she being too harsh on Singapore? Share your thoughts with us in the comments.
