Driving in Malaysia can be rather trying sometimes especially with so many unfortunate incidents that can happen on the road. Recently, a Malaysian lady encountered a road bully in Kuala Lumpur that left her pretty traumatised.
A reader, Penny* wrote to us at WORLD OF BUZZ about how upset she was when she had the misfortune to meet a road bully when she was driving to work on April 24, at around 8.40am. She was on Jalan Loke Yew heading to Jalan Maharajalela where the roads were becoming a bottle neck, so she had to cut in between the vehicles.
“I had already switched on my indicator and was preparing to cut in front of a small lorry as my car was already ahead. I accelerated to move forward but when the driver saw me doing that, he also accelerated to stop me from cutting in front of him. This caused his lorry to hit the back of my car and I had to honk at him to stop at a bus stop.”
Luckily, her car only suffered from minor scratches as a result of the bump but when she turned around to confront the lorry driver, he was unapologetic. He started scolding her and saying things like, “You don’t know how to drive! How can you drive like that?!” So rude!
Penny said that he kept trying to blame her for the accident and was shouting intimidatingly at her even though they were in broad daylight in a public place. As he turned to leave, he dared her to make a police report. So, she took a photo of the man and his vehicle before leaving but the lorry driver saw her doing it and walked towards her as if he wanted to physically stop her.
Terrified, she quickly ran inside her vehicle but before the lorry driver drove off, he shouted at her again. Penny was shocked and stunned at what had just happened. Since she was trembling in fear, she had to calm herself down in the car before making her way to her office. She said, “No doubt he decided to bully me even more especially since I was all alone. I wonder whether he’d treat a man the same way (if the man was the victim).”
She went to the police station in Damansara Utama to lodge a report for her own safety and could not stop herself from sobbing when she told the police officers about the road bully. However, Penny said that even though the police officers were nice and understanding, they told her that they could not do anything much as the bully had not physically hurt her.
She added, “I thought to myself, isn’t that sad? I have to get hurt for the police to take action. Now this man will think he got away with being a road bully and be more daring next time to do this to another unfortunate driver. It’s sad that up to this day, a woman will get bullied more just because of her gender.”
Although Penny wasn’t physically hurt and her car only sustained a few scratches, she wanted to share her story as she does not want anyone else to suffer the same fate as her. “I want people to be aware of that horrible man. He also probably saw that I’m a woman, so he took advantage of the situation and decided not to offer any apology or compensation. No woman should ever have to go through that and having to feel intimidated or shaken up like I was that day.”
Be careful when driving and always stay alert on the road!
