It seems that women are not safe anywhere and that the same horrifying event can happen to different women but in exactly the same place.
Recently, a Malaysian woman who preferred to be unnamed took to Twitter to share the horrifying experience she had with a random man who masturbated in front of her in public.
In her post she detailed that it happened 2 days ago at Tamarind Square, which in the past has had similar issues.
“I was taking the lift at Block E3 and didn’t realise I was being followed by a guy until we got into the same lift,” she wrote.
“He was wanking the entire time and what was worse was he approached me asking the way to Tamarind Suite.”
She said that he was masturbating whilst trying to make conversation and even stepped closer to her and was scanning her body the entire time.
“When someone said that you’d never know what it feels like until it happens to yourself. Now that’s true. I’m shaking,” she added.
Getting help
She managed to step out the lift and rushed to a spa in the building.
“Told the guard nearby what happened. Thanks to him, he chased & caught him 10 minutes later, brought him to the security team.”
“Security team then asked me to verify, if they caught the right person. I said yes it was him. The flasher shrugged his head and said ‘I didn’t do anything, she’s lying. If I do intend to harm, she can just shout what? I didn’t do anything!’,” said the victim.
After being prodded even further he finally admitted, got on his knees and begged her not to do anything as he is just a student.
She said that the security told her to just give him a warning and to call his parents. She went on to lodge a police report that very night and the police are currently investigating the matter.
Urges other women to be careful
“Regardless of how bright and open the space is, please be extra careful especially if you’re walking alone. I’ve always loved going there but knowing women can’t feel safe taking a lift alone is sad,” she wrote.
“I’m sad I wasn’t extra-careful. I’m sad I didn’t realise (that I was) being followed. Knowing a guy that young is able to flash and deny it is sad. Sad of what people have turned into.”
She also hopes that the management of the building and the police will take further precaution as she isn’t the first victim it has happened to in that very building.
“This isn’t school, I can’t reach out to his parents telling them that ‘hello your son just wanked at me’,” she said.
We hope that the victim gets the justice she is seeking for. To all the women out there, always remember to be aware of your surroundings and to be extra vigilant whilst in public.
