This is great news that will make all Malaysians proud!
We might have been really sad when we heard that our squash queen, Datuk Nicole Ann David was retiring. But now, we have a new up and coming squash player and her name is Sivasangari Subramaniam from Sungai Petani, Kedah!
On 24th October, Sivasangari was paired up against Amanda Sobhy from the United States of America, who is ranked 8th in the world, during the opening round of the Women’s World Championships in Cairo, Egypt. Sivasangari went against Amanda in a five-set match and against all odds, she was able to win triumphantly!
The scores for the five thrilling sets were 9-11,11-9,6-11,12-10,11-6 and with this win, she has officially stamped her name on the biggest stage of the Professional Squash Association (PSA). She is now ranked 48th worldwide, according to The Star!
This victory is her biggest one yet and before this, she beat several players in the top 20 too! This Saturday, she will be taking on world no. 29, Milou van der Heijden.
Sivasangari’s teammate is doing great as well! Aifa Azman sent world no. 17 Joey Chan home with another 5-set match, with the scores being 14-12, 7-11, 11-6, 7-11, 11-8.
We’re so very proud of these 2 squash players, and we hope that they’ll be able to win in their future matches. No matter what, we Malaysians will always be behind you, Sivasangari and Aifa!
