A local influencer has sparked controversy after making disparaging remarks about students in the arts and literature stream.
In a recent statement, the controversial influencer, DMA Islam, claimed that “most students who study literature are unintelligent” and described arts degrees as a “fallback option.” He further alleged that those who pursue such fields do so to avoid more challenging disciplines like STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).

According to DMA, many arts students simply want to obtain a degree like others but choose what he called an easy path, or “the path of least resistance,” suggesting that literature and related courses are easier and less demanding.
“Students who pursue literature are stupid,” DMA remarked in a viral Threads post.
DMA has previously faced online criticism after claiming that students who studied Mass Communication have “nothing much to do or learn,” alleging that they spend most of their time “dancing.”

The remarks quickly drew backlash on social media, with many users criticising the statements as narrow-minded and disrespectful. Critics argued that the arts and humanities play a vital role in society by contributing to critical thinking, cultural understanding, communication, and creativity, skills that are equally important alongside technical expertise.
Others pointed out that individuals have different strengths and interests, and that academic paths should not be ranked in such a dismissive manner. Many also came forward to defend the value of literature and the arts.

One netizen, who is a Malay literature graduate, pointed out that without literature, there would be no books, and without books, there would be no knowledge.
“If literature didn’t exist, perhaps you couldn’t even express your opinions,” the netizen commented.
What do you think of DMA’s controversial take?
