There is a Pasar Borneo happening every Saturday in Seri Kembangan! As someone who lives only 10 minutes away from the area, of course, I had to check it out.
Pasar Borneo is held every Saturday from 7am to 11am. I arrived at around 9:30am and some iconic East Malaysian food like Mee Kolok Sarawak and Sibu Kampua Mee have already been sold out.
I found a few stalls selling traditional Borneo desserts such as Kek Lapis and Kuih Jala. To my surprise, Kuih Jala actually tasted less sweet than I expected it to be. I also tried out the colourful Kek Lapis with different jams, they were priced at around RM15 per box.
The Pasar is also home to several stalls selling bamboo, midin, pako, bunga kantan, as well as banana stem, which we seldom see in most bazaars and supermarkets here in Peninsular.
A few stalls that sell traditional handmade jewellery and Borneo traditional costumes also caught my attention. The vibrant, beaded earrings and necklaces are approximately RM30. If you know how to make your own clothes, you can also purchase batik cloth.
Other than that, there are also condiments like belacan midin, loofa, dried seafood, and ayam pansoh available. Before leaving, I got myself a big cup of chocolate drink for only RM3, as well as porridge with ginger sauce for RM9.
It was a nice experience discovering and learning about the unique food and items from East Malaysia. This is the perfect place to check out if you’re an East Malaysian in Peninsular who misses home, or simply wants to try out scrumptious, authentic delicacies from Borneo.
