Dr Mahathir Mohamad has hit back at the Prime Minister for suggesting that his sons should return their wealth to the government if it was gained through illegal means.
In a post on X, Mahathir slammed Anwar Ibrahim, calling him an “amazing liar,” and insisted that neither he nor his sons had ever declared owning RM1.2 billion or RM4 billion, as claimed by Anwar.

“I have never made such a confession”
Responding to Anwar’s claims that he should return the money unless he can clearly explain its source, Mahathir stressed that he never admitted to owning such amounts and had already explained where his wealth came from.
“I have never made such a confession, and I have already explained the source of my wealth. Where did he get all these figures and claims from?” he wrote.
Mahathir also pointed out that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) had questioned his sons several times, with each session lasting hours.

MACC has cleared his sons’ asset declarations as legitimate
Mahathir said the MACC confirmed that his sons, Tan Sri Mokhzani, declared assets worth RM1 billion, while Mirzan declared RM246.2 million, and the commission was satisfied with both declarations.
He clarified that Chief Commissioner of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, Azam Baki, wasn’t referring to cash alone, but to the overall value of their assets, which include property, shares, liabilities, and other investments built up over more than 20 years in business.
“Did Azam Baki say he was satisfied without knowing where the wealth came from? Did MACC even ask about the source of the declared assets? They’ve never said the money was from an unclear or illegal source. If that were the case, how could MACC and Azam Baki say they were satisfied?” he said.

Mahathir also took aim at Anwar’s alleged remarks, which he claimed seemed to demand that he and his sons sell off all their assets and hand over the proceeds to the government.
“Why should I or my sons admit to something that’s not true? Neither I nor my sons ever said we own RM1.2 billion or RM4 billion. What the MACC said was that Mokhzani declared assets worth RM1 billion, and Mirzan declared RM246.2 million, and the MACC was satisfied with that,” he said.
