One of the many benefits of social media is the platform it provides professionals, creators and artists to share their knowledge and craft as well as connect with their fans or following.
However, there are still certain things that may be best shown in-person, such as when a doctor is demonstrating a surgery technique to their students.
This is because uploading possibly graphic videos and livestreaming surgeries could be a big legal offence, as learned by this Thai doctor who was recently slammed by netizens for doing a TikTok live while performing surgery in a hospital operating theatre.
The livestream was first made viral by a tweet on October 31 (Monday) which had a video recording of it. It was captioned, “A while ago, in a sub-district, a doctor did a live broadcast on TikTok while treating a surgery patient. Is this appropriate?”
Are live broadcasts acceptable?
According to Thaiger, some netizens revealed that “they had seen live medical videos like this before, but they were usually posted by beauty clinics and cosmetic surgery centres“.
Whereas other netizens said that videos such as this one is acceptable as long as the patient consents to being featured, which seems to not be the case because netizens speculated that it was an emergency operation as the screenshots show that the live broadcast was at 3am.
The doctor has apologised
Following the uproar online, the doctor apologised for his lack of judgment in doing the TikTok live.
“I would like to apologise for doing a live broadcast of the surgery. I thought it would be fine since the patient’s face and surgical process were not shown in the video”, he said in the video’s comment section.
“It was my mistake. I apologise to everyone for this”, he wrote. The identity of the doctor and his TikTok account have not been reported.
He’ll be punished accordingly
Permanent Secretary of the Medical Council of Thailand, Ittaporn Kanacharoen announced that the authorities are aware of the issue. He said his officers would investigate the case and punish the doctor according to the Medical Profession Act.
Ittiporn also took to his Facebook post to urge netizens to share information about the doctor.
