A recent study about vehicle road safety by iSeeCars, a US-based car search engine website, revealed a rather surprising result regarding the most dangerous car brands in the country.

This is because, despite the many safety features touted by the company on its vehicles, popular electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Tesla was found to be the most dangerous car brand in the US.

To identify the most dangerous vehicles on U.S. roads today, iSeeCars analysed fatality data from the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) of model year 2018-2022 cars with car crashes that resulted in at least one occupant fatality.

For the most dangerous car brands, the study found that Tesla has the highest fatal accident rate of any brand in the US, recording a fatal accident rate of 5.6 (cars per billion vehicle miles).

The second most dangerous car brand in the US is Kia (5.5 fatal accident rate), followed by Buick (4.8 fatal accident rate), Dodge (4.4 fatal accident rate) and Hyundai (3.9 fatal accident rate). For context, the overall average in the fatal accident rate for all cars is 2.8.

Two Tesla models are in the top most dangerous cars list

Moreover, two Tesla models also made it into the most dangerous car models list despite Tesla’s advanced driver-assist technology.

The Tesla Model Y is the car model with the 6th most frequent occupant fatalities in the US, with a 10.6 fatal accident rate (cars per billion vehicle miles), 3.7 times higher compared to the overall average.

Meanwhile, the Tesla Model S is the 21st most dangerous car model in the US, with a 5.8 fatal accident rate (cars per billion vehicle miles), 2 times higher than the average in the country.

The Tesla Model Y is also the SUV with the 3rd most frequent occupant fatalities in the US, with a 10.6 fatal accident rate (cars per billion vehicle miles), 4.8 times higher than the SUV average in the country.
