The price hikes are no joke, especially for low and middle-income households and small and medium enterprises.
Yet, certain businesses are taking advantage of the situation by implementing minimum purchase requirements for customers who want to purchase cooking oil.
The ISU SEMASA VIRAL Twitter page shared a video of a Malaysian confronting a grocery store worker who allegedly implemented such strategies as customers must apparently purchase items worth RM20 and above to be able to buy cooking oil.
They wrote, “Most shops are indeed like this. Selling cooking oil with conditions, (customers) have to buy things only then are they allowed to buy cooking oil.”
In the video, the customer questioned the grocery store worker on whether they had cooking oil.
“I want to buy cooking oil and you’re telling me (after purchasing) RM20 worth of items only will I get cooking oil? Do you have oil or not? Where are these rules coming from?”
It is later revealed that the worker had kept the cooking oil behind the counter as the worker walked away, and the customer ventured behind the counter.
“Hah, they’ve kept it there. See this, (only after spending) RM20 can you buy cooking oil. How can it be this way?”
“Now, I want oil. I don’t care. I am a Malaysian. Why am I not allowed to buy this cooking oil?” the man questioned as the video ended.
