Hong Kong passport holders can now stay in Malaysia for up to 90 days without a visa, a triple increase from the previous visa-free travel limit of 30 days.
The matter was discussed between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Chief Executive John Lee Ka-Chiu during the latter’s official 3-day working visit to our country recently.
Following the meeting, Anwar announced that the government has agreed to Hong Kong’s request to extend the visa-free duration in Malaysia to 90 days, which goes into effect today (28 July).
With this new implementation, both Hong Kongers and Malaysians can visit each other’s territories for 90 days without a visa, as Hong Kong is already allowing Malaysian passport holders to stay for 90-day visa-free travel.
Circling back to the meeting between Anwar and John Lee Ka-Chiu, several other matters of common interest were also discussed. These include trade, investment, finances, rail transit system, education and tourism.
The HKSAR Chief Executive also asserted that Hong Kong is considering opening a trade office in Kuala Lumpur to strengthen ties and improve economic trade.
Should this come to fruition, Kuala Lumpur would join other world cities such as Dubai, London, New York and Tokyo with a Hong Kong trade office.
