The Singapore Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) has issued a reminder for travellers going through the Singapore-Malaysia land border to not wear or display any articles in relation to the Israel-Hamas conflict.
In a press release yesterday (15 November), the Singaporean body added that the authorities will be taking “firm action” against those who refuse to comply, including denying their entry into the country.
ICA said that the measure is enforced given the heightened sensitivities as a result of the conflict in the Middle East. It asserted,
“All travellers using our checkpoints are also advised against the public display and wearing of articles in relation to the Israel-Hamas conflict, given the heightened sensitivities.”
“Unless expressly exempted, the public display of foreign national emblems without a permit is an offence under the Foreign National /Emblems (Control of Display) Act 1949. The authorities will take firm action against those who refuse to comply, including denying their entry into Singapore.”
Accordingly, ICA also announced that it is stepping up security measures at both Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints.
Travellers are further advised to factor in additional waiting time or immigration clearance, especially on weekends.
Besides that, ICA said that in view of the school holidays, heavy traffic is expected at both checkpoints from today until 2 January 2024.
During the recent Deepavali holidays, a whopping 1.53 million crossings were recorded at the checkpoints.
