Woah, we didn’t know a simple license plate could carry such a hefty price!

Since the 30th of October this year, the PNG vehicle registration numbers were opened for tender by the Penang Road Transport Department, and it has received an overwhelming response with a total of 1,554 bidders.

One vehicle registration number in particular, “PNG1”, apparently received the highest bid ever in the state, at RM350,000! That costs more than my car, wei!

The bidder who secured the number turned out to be the CEO of a property development company, according to the New Straits Times.

Total bids received for PNG is RM1.9 million involving 738 successful bidders,” the state Road Transport Department’s enforcement unit chief Zulkarnain Yasin stated at a press conference today (30th November).

“PNG1 recorded the highest ever in the state, passing the previous record for PNB1 sold for RM173,800. Applicants may refer to our notice board to see the list of successful bidders from today onwards.”

Following PNG1 in second and third place were PNG5 (winning bid: RM95,000) and PNG9 (winning bid: RM91,500).

It’s evident that there are loads of Penangites who are proud of their state, since some of them are willing to spend thousands of ringgit on vehicle registration numbers with the letters “PNG” (short for Penang).

Well, we suppose this is one way to show your state pride! Good for them!
