“My grandma doesn’t care about me, so I might as well get caught by the police.”
A 26-year-old man made a rash decision to rob a mini mart after his grandmother refused to lend him money to buy cigarettes. The incident happened at about 3.11 AM on April 14 last year, and he faced five charges, including attempted robbery, providing false testimony, and the violation of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act.
He pleaded guilty to three of the charges on Monday morning, with the remaining charges to be taken into consideration by the judge when sentencing.

Not only was he caught by the police, but the 26-year-old Xie Xin Yang (transliteration) was sentenced to 6 months in jail and 12 strokes of the cane.
He called his grandma over the phone to ask for money
At around 7 PM, before the incident, Xin Yang visited his friend at Avenue 7 and stayed there until 2 AM. When he needed money to buy cigarettes, he called his grandmother, who refused to lend him money, prompting Xin Yang to feel that his grandmother didn’t care about him.
So, Xin Yang walked into the mini-mart and told the cashier that he had stolen a bottle of green tea. The cashier said that as long as he returned the green tea, he would not call the police. Xin Yang then returned with an iron rod and placed the weapon around the cashier’s neck, and told him to empty the cash register.
The cashier then told Xin Yang that the register couldn’t be opened unless a transaction was being performed. Xin Yang continued to push the cashier to open the register, despite knowing there were CCTV cameras around. The cashier, however, managed to persuade the defendant to leave and called the police afterwards.

The mini-mart incident was not Xin Yang’s first case
At about 2:50 am on March 14, 2024, the police received a report that Xin Yang appeared at Block 306, Yishun Central, wearing brass knuckles. Xin Yang admitted that he had a bad relationship with his colleague and asked to meet with the other party because of a dispute over work, reported Lian He Zao Bao.
Xin Yang also said he knew his colleague was a member of the triad, so he wore the brass knuckles, which he had been keeping since he was 13, to the meeting place. The colleague, however, never showed up.
