An upcoming event has sparked backlash after an organisation announced plans to hold a glamping (glamorous camping) event on 17 and 18 January, believed to be taking place in Hulu Langat, Selangor.
The “Glamping with Pride” event has drawn attention from PAS Youth chief Sukri Omar and the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM), both of whom have voiced concerns over the event’s LGBTQ elements.

Selangor Sultan orders “Glamping With Pride” event to be stopped
In response, the Selangor Ruler, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, has instructed the State’s Islamic Religious Council (MAIS) and the Mufti to take firm action against any activities involving the LGBTQ community.
In a joint statement, MAIS Chairman Datuk Salehuddin Saidin and Selangor Mufti Datuk Dr Anhar Opir stated that the Sultan had expressed strong opposition to any LGBTQ-related activities in the state.
“His Royal Highness the Sultan of Selangor has instructed MAIS and the Selangor Mufti to meet with him at Istana Bukit Kayangan to convey his firm stance on the organisation of the programme ‘Glamping with Pride,’ which has been linked to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community,” the statement read.

In line with the Sultan’s decree, MAIS and the Selangor Mufti have also voiced their opposition to any organisation, celebration, or promotion of LGBT lifestyles considered deviant in any district of Selangor.
Salehuddin and Anhar added that any effort to promote or legitimise such lifestyles goes against the objectives of Islamic law, particularly in protecting lineage.
“Although these acts are individual sins between a person and Allah, beyond human limits, they may bring the wrath and curse of Allah upon the state.”

“Muslims should not be influenced by Western lifestyles”
At the same time, MAIS emphasised that Muslims, especially youths, should not be influenced by Western lifestyles and cultures that promote such deviant behaviours under the guise of human rights.
Following Sultan Sharafuddin’s firm stance on the matter, MAIS and the Selangor Mufti urged the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and local authorities (PBT) to prevent the issuance of any permits for this programme or similar events in the state.
“In addition, His Royal Highness does not approve the establishment of any associations, clubs, organisations, or NGOs related to LGBT activities in Selangor.
“The Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS), PBT, and PDRM are also asked to closely monitor and take strict action in accordance with the law to ensure such activities are not carried out, as decreed by the Sultan of Selangor,” the statement added.
