This is not a drill. Robert Downey Jr is officially back in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, despite Iron Man’s ultimate death in Avengers: Endgame, which was all the way back in 2019.
Do we have Marvel Jesus (Deadpool) to thank for this?
However, here’s the catch. Robert Downey Jr is NOT returning as Tony Stark / Iron Man.
At the San Diego Comic-Con 2024, fans were treated to a plethora of good news about comic book movies, but it’s safe to say that no one foresaw Robert Downey Jr in a green hood unmasking himself during a panel. Fans quickly identified the costumes that Robert and others were wearing on stage.
Robert is set to appear as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday, which is scheduled for a release in May 2026!
That’s not all. Robert has also signed on to appear as the villainous Doctor Doom in another movie – Avengers: Secret Wars, scheduled for a 2027 release!
It has been five years since Robert’s emotional exit from the MCU as Tony Stark / Iron Man when he sacrificed himself to save the world from Thanos.
According to Variety, Robert said earlier that he was open to returning to the MCU but did not specify which character.
In case you are not aware, Doctor Doom, AKA Victor Von Doom, is a supervillain who first appeared in The Fantastic Four comic books and is an archenemy of the superheroes who aim to bring order to humanity by conquering the world.
Throughout his appearances in the comic books, Doctor Doom has encountered the X-Men, Spider-Man, and Iron Man. With the multiverse in effect in the MCU, do you think audiences get to see these encounters on the big screen? Here’s a sneak peek of the fans’ excitement when Robert unmasked himself.
