The flood in Kelantan is, by far, the worst disaster to hit the state in the last 10 years. The flood victims don’t only have to deal with the loss of lives, but also other damages.
In a viral Facebook video, a road in Tumpat, Kelantan was severely damaged after the floodwater receded. The road collapsed due to the immense pressure and flow of the floodwater. Unfortunately, the location was not the only place with a severely damaged road.
The roads in 5 Kelantan districts also sustained major damages due to the disaster.
The Deputy Minister of Works, Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said that a total of 14 federal roads and 13 state roads are closed at the moment to all vehicles. The districts with badly damaged roads include:
- Tanah Merah
- Pasir Mas
- Machang
- Tumpat
- Gua Musang
Ahmad has also instructed the state’s Public Works Department (JKR) to speed up the fixing works and revealed the cost needed to fix the damaged roads.
“The cost to fix the damaged roads in Kelantan due to the flood is estimated to be around RM22.5 million,” Ahmad revealed in a media conference at the temporary evacuation center (PPS) in Kubang Batang, where he handed over 150 boxes of essential supplies to the flood victims.
Ahmad also said the ministry will work on the cost through the Ministry of Finance or the Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) by applying for an additional budget due to this disaster.
The damages for the Federal roads in Kelantan alone will cost RM16 million to fix, with 8 landslides and 2 damaged road shoulders reported on the Federal roads.
“We hope the affected families will be patient with this disaster,” Ahmad said.
As of 9 AM this morning (December 3), the flood situation in Kelantan has shown some improvement. According to statistics by the Malaysian Department of Social Welfare, 56,809 flood victims were recorded in the state compared to over 90,000 victims yesterday.
