Despite being sentenced to jail for corruption in the infamous SRC International case, former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is still a popular figure, with his vocal supporters aplenty nationwide.

Not surprisingly, one of his supporters is former de facto Law Minister Dato’ Zaid Ibrahim, who was also Najib’s lawyer during the later stages of his SRC International trial.

Recently, Zaid caused a stir on social media after publicly calling for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to set Najib Razak free, claiming that such a move would be “for the sake of the people”.

Taking to Twitter, Zaid said that Anwar has to change his mind about Najib as UMNO is currently weak and that only Najib would help the Unity Government to win in the upcoming state elections.

Zaid asserted,

“Dear PM, you have to change your mind about Najib – for the sake of the people. Let him free. This coming election; Madani needs to win; you need to be PM for a few more years. UMNO is weak; only Najib will help you win.”

The former Law Minister added that despite Najib’s guilty verdict, the RM42 million corruption charge in the SRC International trial is just “a small change” in the scheme of things.

He added that Najib’s release won’t be an issue as from now on, corruption would be a thing of the past under Anwar’s strict and clean leadership. Zaid also claimed that no one can say Anwar is soft on corruption by pardoning Najib.

Well, I don’t know about you, but pardoning someone for corruption sounds exactly like the opposite of fighting corruption.

So, what do you guys think of Zaid’s statement? Share your thoughts with us in the comments.
