The Covid-19 pandemic is not ending anytime soon and many new procedures have been set in place including serving a mandatory 14-day quarantine for those returning to Malaysia. Returnees would also have to bear the full cost of their stay.

Starting 3 August, it has been implemented that returning Malaysian students under the category of B40 will be exempted from paying the quarantine fees. This particular group will be sent to the Public Training Institute (ILA) for free quarantine services, as reported by The Borneo Post.

In order to ease the process, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, Senior Minister of the Security Cluster has urged such students to register themselves with the Foreign Ministry.

Thus, upon arriving in Malaysia, the authorities would already have a list of students who would be brought directly to ILA without having to loiter around the hotels.

“Yesterday, there were reports about students returning from Yemen loitering in the hotel area because they could not afford to pay the quarantine costs,” he said.

“So, the meeting today agreed for students from low-income families to be exempted from paying the costs, but those who can afford it must pay themselves.”

For those who have already arrived in the country prior to this announcement, they can make an appeal to the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma). Additionally, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob also mentioned that loan or scholarship sponsors should cover these fees on behalf of students who went abroad.
