As an effect of inflation, many things in our daily life are getting more expensive, this includes food.
However, it doesn’t justify paying 91 SGD (RM304) for 2 large plates of Hong Kong kai lan.
A Facebook post by Shin Min Daily talks about a certain Mr Lin who went to a restaurant in Singapore for lunch.
On Deepavali, 28-year-old Mr Lin went out with some of his close ones for a dim sum lunch at a restaurant in Vivo City.
The group of 8 ordered a variety of dishes that included 2 large plates of Hong Kong kai lan in oyster sauce. It is said that the portion size was recommended by the waiter.
When it was time to pay, they saw that the Hong Kong kai lan was priced at 45.60SGD (RM152.56) each. The price for the 2 plates of vegetables took up almost one-third of the total bill and was the most expensive item in the long receipt!
After looking at the price, Mr Lin asked the cashier if it was accurate and the personnel confirmed it.
It is said that Hong Kong kai lan is usually more expensive than other dishes as the cooking process is more complex. The price stated on the menu is 22.80 SGD for a small portion but the prices for the medium portion (34.20 SGD) and the large portion (45.60 SGD) were not stated in the menu.
Shin Min Daily was told by some F&B operators that dish sizes are usually according to pax: small portions are for 2-3 people, medium is for 5-6 and large is for 8-10.
Netizens in the comments were shocked and said that from now on, they will be asking for prices before ordering.
“Nowadays no matter where you eat you have to ask for the price first, if not you’ll get cut (figurative expression for high prices).”
“But why are the other dishes not charged according to pax, only the kai lan is? You should ask the manager of the restaurant if they will pay 91 SGD for 2 plates of vegetables.”
“In the future, we have to ask for the price of vegetables before ordering. 91SGD is really too much.”
