The festive season is like the “time off” from work for a celebration not just to let off some steam but also a bonding time with family and relatives. Some people prefer big celebrations while others are just looking for simplicity as long as it’s something they like.
As for Malaysian radio DJ, Alsen, Chinese New Year means standing in the heat of the kitchen. In his recent Instagram reel @alsen.dj, Alsen revealed that he finds joy in baking the traditional Kuih Kapit during CNY, which takes him a trip down memory lane.
“I’m not even sure why must I bake Kuih Kapit on CNY. Maybe I love the snacks, or maybe I’m just looking to relive the good old times of CNY.”
For his baking, Alsen doesn’t need a fancy, air-conditioned kitchen. He “brings the kitchen” out to his garage in his hometown, lights up the charcoal, and bakes the kuih kapit there for a good major throwback. Alsen moves like a natural, and this wasn’t Alsen’s 1st rodeo in baking the local traditional snack.
In a brief conversation with WORLD OF BUZZ, Alsen said he has been baking kuih kapit during CNY for many years and if time allows it, he would return to his hometown early just to bake.
“Ever since I started working in KL, I will try my best to go back to hometown early to bake. But not when the Covid-19 pandemic was at its peak when we were not allowed to travel.”
Alsen is never alone when it comes to baking these CNY snacks. It’s not just a time for him to showcase his skill but also a perfect time for family bonding where he gets some extra manpower.
“I usually bake with my mother. My sister will sometimes help too if she has the time,” Alsen told WORLD OF BUZZ.
Who says you need a grand celebration and crowds to enjoy CNY? At least for Alsen, CNY is all about doing what you like, and every year is about reliving the good old days of the festive season, just like what our inner child misses. You can watch Alsen’s short clip in baking Kuih Kapit below.
