Plastic surgery has become quite the common thing in today’s trend in beauty. Many people are willing to go through excruciating processes just to be better looking.
But with such invasive procedures upon our body, surely there are terrible side effects too right?
A recent study has shown a link between breast implants and cancer. The American Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) recently released a statement regarding this matter, according to Daily Mail.
They said,
“All of the information to date suggests that women with breast implants have a very low but increased risk of developing ALCL compared to women who do not have breast implants.”
ALCL stands for Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma, a type of cancer which affects the lymphatic system. The FDA explained that getting rid of the implants was a key move in the treatment of this illness.
“Most cases of breast implant-associated ALCL are treated by removal of the implant and the capsule surrounding the implant and some cases have been treated by chemotherapy and radiation.
“As of February 1, 2017, the FDA has received a total of 359 medical device reports of breast-implant-associated ALCL, including nine deaths.”
In most occasions of this implant and cancer case, just surgery of removing the implants was successful in ending the cancer. But sometimes chemotherapy and radiotherapy were still necessary.
Certain researches theorized that bacteria from the silicone implants could have been introduced to the body during surgery. This would then affect the immune system and trigger cancer.
But this has yet to have been proven.
However, due to these shocking findings, the French Regulatory Authority is seriously looking into the matter.
The British government is also awaiting for more findings but plastic surgeons from all over that country have started warning patients about the link between ALCL and cancer.
Even the World Health Organisation has issued alerts to doctors everywhere to report such cases.
This goes to show that sometimes beauty isn’t everything compared to our health. If you were planning on getting breast implants, maybe you should think again.
